Our worst critic is more than often our very own selves. Everyone’s got that cunning, persistent voice telling us our work is not good enough, that we’ll fail, or whatever self-abusing thought you can imagine. We start to forget about how much fun creating art can be, it even starts to become painful. I guess it’s different for everyone. It helps to immerse yourself in the world, go on walks, plant stuff, check out all kinds of different galleries or museums, listen to music, get out in nature, sketch and doodle just for fun, take a train somewhere new, take pictures, the list goes on. I’m sure you can think of many fun things to do. Try to look less at the product and enjoy the process of painting, the ability to express your feelings however you want. It’s hard to make art when we’re trying to make perfect art. Be kind to yourself and just play.
A little while ago I made a video all about my favorite ways of dealing with that evil voice and/or making it shut up, if you haven’t already seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn48KhTO-4I
